Q: How do you remove wallpaper paste?

A: Create a water and vinegar solution and spritz this onto the paste. This will then reactivate the paste, which will make it easy to wash off.

Q: Can I paint over wallpaper?

A: While this isn't completely impossible, it's not usually recommended. Painting over wallpaper will often loosen the paper, which can cause bumps and bubbles on the wall.

The seams of the wallpaper will usually also be left visual and can look unappealing. It's best to remove old wallpaper before painting your walls.

Q: Can I put new wallpaper over old wallpaper?

A: This is not recommended as papering over old wallpaper can cause the old paper's bond to fail. This can result in bubbles on the wall or can even cause the paper to peel away from the wall.

Q: Can you paint over a dark colour?

A: It is possible to paint over a dark colour, although if using a light colour over it, then two or more coats of primer will be required.

This will prevent the dark colour from showing through the lighter shade.

Q: How long does it take for paint to dry?

A: The paint drying time will depend on the type of paint you choose; for instance, latex paints tend to dry within one to four hours.

Oil-based paints take around six to eight hours to dry, although you should wait at least 24 hours before applying another layer of paint.

Q: Which paint is best for bathrooms?

A: You can purchase special paint for your bathroom which contains anti-mildew qualities and is also very easy to clean.

Some of the best paint sheens for a bathroom include semi-gloss and gloss paints, as they repel moisture and are easy to maintain.

Plastering

Q: What’s the best plaster to use?

A: One of the most common types of plaster used when decorating, is ready mix plaster. This type of plaster gives you the perfect ratios of sand and cement, meaning you only have to add water.

Ready mix plaster is great for DIY jobs as it allows you to be precise, without having to think too much about it.

Q: How long does plaster take to dry?

A: Plaster can take up to 6 weeks to fully dry. In most cases, professionals advise that you wait at least one week before decorating a wall that has been freshly plastered. The drying time of plaster depends on the surrounding conditions for example, weather, airflow in the home, whether your heating is on.

Try to keep windows in your home open to allow constant airflow through the building, this will help speed up the drying time naturally. Try not to use your central heating for the first 48 hours as drying out the plaster too fast can cause cracks.

Q: What happens if you paint plaster too soon?

A: If you paint plaster too quickly, it can result in the paint peeling.

Q: Why does plaster crack?

A: Cracks may appear due to the plaster being old, as a result of poor installation or as a result of the plaster expanding and shrinking while drying.

Flooring

Q: What is karndean flooring?

A: Karndean is a type of luxury vinyl flooring which features five textured including a HD photographic layer, a PVC clear embossed wear layer, two pieces of PVC backing and a polyurethane protective coating. This type of flooring is not only highly durable due to its multiple layers but is also extremely flexible and can be used for almost any flooring application.

Q: What are Karndean Knight tiles?

A: Karndean Knight tiles are another tile option from Karndean outside the main four of Opus, Da Vinci, Palio Clic and Korlok. Knight tiles are highly customisable, and are priced similar to Opus tiles, although Knight tiles are better suited to low-footfall areas due to their small wear level.

Q: How much extra flooring should I order?

A: When ordering flooring, you may want to consider ordering more than you need, should any damage occur, and you need it to be prepared with the same material. Flooring experts advise that you should purchase 10% more flooring if your space is less than 100 square metres or 7% more for living areas larger than 100 square metres.
